Extremely Irradiated Hot Jupiters: Non-Oxide Inversions, H- Opacity, and Thermal Dissociation of Molecules
Extremely irradiated hot Jupiters, exoplanets reaching dayside temperatures
2000 K, stretch our understanding of planetary atmospheres and the models
we use to interpret observations. While these objects are planets in every
other sense, their atmospheres reach temperatures at low pressures comparable
only to stellar atmospheres. In order to understand our \textit{a priori}
theoretical expectations for the nature of these objects, we self-consistently
model a number of extreme hot Jupiter scenarios with the PHOENIX model
atmosphere code. PHOENIX is well-tested on objects from cool brown dwarfs to
expanding supernovae shells and its expansive opacity database from the UV to
far-IR make PHOENIX well-suited for understanding extremely irradiated hot
Jupiters. We find several fundamental differences between hot Jupiters at
temperatures 2500 K and their cooler counterparts. First, absorption by
atomic metals like Fe and Mg, molecules including SiO and metal hydrides, and
continuous opacity sources like H all combined with the short-wavelength
output of early-type host stars result in strong thermal inversions, without
the need for TiO or VO. Second, many molecular species, including HO, TiO,
and VO are thermally dissociated at pressures probed by eclipse observations,
biasing retrieval algorithms that assume uniform vertical abundances. We
discuss other interesting properties of these objects, as well as future
prospects and predictions for observing and characterizing this unique class of
astrophysical object, including the first self-consistent model of the hottest
known jovian planet, KELT-9b.Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, 1 table. Submitted to Ap
Päällekkäispuhunta suomenkielisissä televisiokeskusteluissa
Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan päällekkäispuhuntaa suomenkielisissä televisiokeskusteluissa. Yhtäältä tavoitteena on selvittää, missä vaiheessa päällekkäispuhunta alkaa suhteessa äänessä olevan puhujan vuoroon ja millä keinoilla keskustelijat ratkaisevat päällekkäispuhuntatilanteen. Toisaalta tavoitteena on myös selvittää, millaisia vuorovaikutustehtäviä päällekkäispuhunnalla on televisiokeskusteluissa. Yhtenä tutkielman tavoitteena on lisäksi saada vastaus siihen, millaisissa keskustelun jaksoissa päällekkäispuhuntaa esiintyy.
Aineistona tutkimuksessa käytetään kolmea nauhoitettua Ylen TV1:n A-talk-keskusteluohjelman jaksoa. Yhden ohjelman jakson pituus on noin 45 minuuttia, joten kokonaisuudessaan aineistoa on yli kaksi tuntia. Aineistosta on litteroitu tutkielman kannalta oleelliset jaksot.
The UFO controller: Gestural music performance
This thesis introduces The UFO Controller, a free-space gestural controller for performing electronic music. It documents the design process and the main features of the UFO, analyses my experiences of performing with the controller and compares the UFO to other known free-space control instruments. The thesis also examines the domain of electronic music, critically analyzes the live performances in that field and investigates the importance of body gestures for the performances.
The UFO is a MIDI controller that uses ultrasonic rangefinder sensors for detecting the hand gestures of a performer. It is a non-tactile controller that is played without physically touching the device. The sensors measure the distance of the performer's hands moving on top of the device and convert that into control data, which can be mapped to any music software or synthesizer.
The use of body gestures, which is commonly reported lacking from the live performances of electronic music, is crucially important for engaging live music performances. The laptop computer has become the de-facto instrument of the concert stages where electronic music is performed. The UFO can help the electronic music performances to become more interesting by moving them towards a more gestural direction. This thesis aims to validate the following claims. Firstly, a novelty free-space controller makes electronic music performances more compelling both for the audience and the performer. Secondly, the use of body gestures is important for the largely disembodied electronic music performances.
The UFO has been seen and heard on concert stages all around the world with my band Phantom. The audiences have been excited and thrilled about it and the UFO has become a subject of wondering for many. Without a doubt, the UFO has raised the bar of my own live performances and helped Phantom to stand out amongst the masses of new electronic indie bands. Furthermore, the UFO has got the attention of various online technology and music blogs (e.g., TechCrunch, Create Digital Music, Synthtopia, NME and The Line Of Best Fit)
Heir of the Mediterranean : The role of Turkey in the speeches of president Erdoğan.
Tutkielmassa tutkitaan Turkin ulkopoliittista viestintää koskien maan asemaa Välimerellä. Tutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää, voidaanko Turkin presidentti Recep Tayyip Erdoğanin puheista tulkita hänen mielikuvansa Turkin roolista lähialueellaan. Tutkielman teoreettinen tausta on sosiologiasta K. J. Holstin kansainvälisten suhteiden tutkimukseen soveltama rooliteoria.
Lopulta aineistoa analysoidaan alueellisten suurvaltojen kriteerien valossa.
Photochemical hazes in sub-Neptunian atmospheres with focus on GJ 1214 b
We study the properties of photochemical hazes in super-Earths/mini-Neptunes
atmospheres with particular focus on GJ1214b. We evaluate photochemical haze
properties at different metallicities between solar and 10000solar.
Within the four orders of magnitude change in metallicity, we find that the
haze precursor mass fluxes change only by a factor of 3. This small
diversity occurs with a non-monotonic manner among the different metallicity
cases, reflecting the interaction of the main atmospheric gases with the
radiation field. Comparison with relative haze yields at different
metallicities from laboratory experiments reveals a qualitative similarity with
our theoretical calculations and highlights the contributions of different gas
precursors. Our haze simulations demonstrate that higher metallicity results
into smaller average particle sizes. Metallicities at and above
100solar with haze formation yields of 10 provide enough haze
opacity to satisfy transit observation at visible wavelengths and obscure
sufficiently the HO molecular absorption features between 1.1 m and
1.7 m. However, only the highest metallicity case considered
(10000solar) brings the simulated spectra into closer agreement with
transit depths at 3.6 m and 4.5 m indicating a high contribution of
CO/CO in GJ1214b's atmosphere. We also evaluate the impact of aggregate
growth in our simulations, in contrast to spherical growth, and find that the
two growth modes provide similar transit signatures (for D=2), but with
different particle size distributions. Finally, we conclude that the simulated
haze particles should have major implications for the atmospheric thermal
structure and for the properties of condensation clouds
Environmental responses of fruiting fungal communities are phylogenetically structured
Through their ephemeral reproductive structures (fruiting bodies), ectomycorrhizal forest soil fungi provide a resource for a plethora of organisms. Thus, resolving what biotic and abiotic factors determine the occurrence and abundance of fruiting bodies is fundamental for understanding the dynamics of forest trophic networks. While the influence of abiotic factors such as moisture and temperature on fungal fruiting are relatively well established, little is known about how these processes interact with the evolutionary history of fungal species to determine when, where, and in which abundance fungal fruiting bodies will emerge. A specific knowledge gap relates to whether species' responses to their environment are phylogenetically structured. Here, we ask whether related fungal taxa respond similarly to climatic factors and forest habitat characteristics, and whether such correlated responses will affect the assembly of fungal fruiting communities. To resolve these questions, we fitted joint species distribution models combining data on the species composition and abundance of fungal fruiting bodies, environmental variation, and phylogenetic relationships among fungal taxa. Our results show that both site-level forest characteristics (dominant tree species and forest age) and climatic factors related to phenology (effective heat sum) greatly influence the occurrence and abundance of fruiting bodies. More importantly, while different fungal species responded unequally to their shared environment, there was a strong phylogenetic signal in their responses, so that related fungal species tended to fruit under similar environmental conditions. Thus, not only are fruiting bodies short-lived and patchily distributed, but the availability of similar resources will be further aggregated in time and space. These strong constraints on resource availability for fungus-associated taxa highlight the potential of fungus-based networks as a model system for studies on the ecology and evolution of resource-consumer relations in ephemeral systems of high spatiotemporal patchiness
Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment Data Simulator
The Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) is a 6U NASA CubeSat
carrying on-board a low-resolution (R~2000--3000), near-ultraviolet (2500--3300
{\AA}) spectrograph. It has a rectangular primary Cassegrain telescope to
maximize the collecting area. CUTE, which is planned for launch in Spring 2020,
is designed to monitor transiting extra-solar planets orbiting bright, nearby
stars aiming at improving our understanding of planet atmospheric escape and
star-planet interaction processes. We present here the CUTE data simulator,
which we complemented with a basic data reduction pipeline. This pipeline will
be then updated once the final CUTE data reduction pipeline is developed. We
show here the application of the simulator to the HD209458 system and a first
estimate of the precision on the measurement of the transit depth as a function
of temperature and magnitude of the host star. We also present estimates of the
effect of spacecraft jitter on the final spectral resolution. The simulator has
been developed considering also scalability and adaptability to other missions
carrying on-board a long-slit spectrograph. The data simulator will be used to
inform the CUTE target selection, choose the spacecraft and instrument settings
for each observation, and construct synthetic CUTE wavelength-dependent transit
light curves on which to develop the CUTE data reduction pipeline.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Astronomical Telescopes,
